The final junior squash tournament of 2017, sponsored by Farfan and Mendes, served off on Tuesday evening at the Georgetown Club squash courts.
Category B opened with some top action with Kirsten Gomes looking sharp against Demetrius DeAbreu with a 3-1 win. Gomes looked a bit shaky in her opening set despite winning 11-9 and showed some frustration after losing her second 11-8, but Gomes pulled off an exciting third set at 11-9 and looked in full flow to win the final set easily at 11-5.
Abosaide Cadogan also looked in top form with a 3-1 win over Ethan Jones. Cadogan looked a bit off in her first set and lost it 12-10, but found her groove quickly to win the next three sets at 11-4, 11-6 and 11-5 to make a convincing statement.
Meanwhile, new talents shone through in the lower categories as some of the young players displayed skilful serves and treated spectators to unexpected rallies.
Some winners in the category C were James Mekdeci and Mohryan Baksh, while Jahcinta Adams and Dhiren Persaud won their games in Category D. Jared Saul and Rayad Boyce won matches in Category E, while Leshaunte Berkley and Matthew Spooner won matches in Category F.
Matches will continue for the rest of the week from 18:00h at the Georgetown Club with the top contenders in Category A getting into action on Wednesday featuring top player Taylor Fernandes.
Fernandes while just a few months removed as a junior will be a part of the event in an effort to push the current crop of juniors to their limits in the tournament.
