Man shot, robbed after leaving ECD bank

A 59-year-old resident of Atlantic Gardens, East Coast Demerara is in a stable condition in a hospital after he was shot during a robbery at about 14:30 hrs today in front of his home.

News Room understands that Lionel Persaud, who is employed as Deputy Program Manager, had just withdrawn $264,000 from Republic Bank at Triumph, ECD and arrived home in his car when he a car approached from a northern direction and blocked his path.

A police report noted that a male immediately exited the rear of the vehicle with a handgun, approached the victim from the driver’s side and relieved him of a bag containing the cash.

In the process, the bandit shot the victim in the upper right foot before rejoining the vehicle and escaped. The victim was rushed to the hospital by a policeman.

Investigators retrieved a spent shell at the scene and are making stringent efforts to trace the vehicle.
