A man on Sunday attempted to smuggle a quantity of cigarettes and marijuana in a pair of sneakers into the Lusignan Prison.

According to Director of Prisons (ag), Gladwin Samuels, the man arrived at the Lusignan checkpoint at around 14:30hrs to deliver clothes and footwear for a prisoner to attend court on Monday.

However, as he was delivering the items, ranks at the checkpoint noticed something amiss and searched the sneakers.

Four packs of cigarettes and 108 grams of suspended marijuana were found.

Items found in the black bag

While persons delivering items are usually documented by submitting some form of identification, Samuels reported that upon noticing something was wrong, the man took off running with his National Identification Card.

His physical description has since been submitted to the police.

Additionally, ranks at the Lusignan Prison also found a black bag in a drain next to the pig pen earlier on Sunday. The bag was searched and suspected marijuana, lighters and other items were found.

On Tuesday last, another smuggler attempted to throw a bag of contraband items over the Lusignan prison walls in the wee hours of the morning. While he was also seen by prison ranks on duty at the northeastern section of the holding area who fired at him, the suspect managed to escape.

A check of the area revealed ten parcels, a camouflage hat and short camouflage pants. When opened, the parcels contain 1002 grams of narcotics, a large quantity of tobacco leaves, four cellphones without SIM cards, one charger, one earpiece and 33 packets of Bristol cigarettes.

On June 11, ranks also fired a shot at a smuggler who attempted to throw a bag over the fence as well.

A raid at the Lusignan prison on June 20 came up with 31 improvised weapons and other items.
