Elderly woman injured in Fly Jamaica accident  dies

An elderly woman who was injured when a Fly Jamaica aircraft crash landed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) succumbed to her injuries on Friday.

Eighty-six-year-old Rookhia Kalloo was returning to Canada with her daughter and a granddaughter with a disability on Friday, November 09, 2018 on the Fly Jamaica flight OJ256, when the plane encountered hydraulic problems and crash-landed at the airport.

Kalloo suffered from head injuries as a result of the hard jolt made by the plane when it ran off the runway and became stuck in the sand.

On Thursday, the woman’s daughter, Lilawatie Persaud recounted that her mother went into shock after the accident and her health began to continually deteriorate.

On Tuesday morning, Kalloo was rushed to the Woodlands Private Hospital where she was in a critical state. The family later transferred her on Thursday to the Georgetown Public Hospital after they were faced with significant financial difficulties.

Kalloo succumbed at about 13:00hrs on Friday, according to family members.
