Arson has been determined as the cause of the fire on December 24, 2018, that gutted the Administrative Building at the Diamond Secondary School, East Bank Demerara.

Investigations revealed that the fire started in the Library, which is located in the same building. Investigators attached to the Government Electrical Inspection team submitted their report to the Fire Service this week, which indicated that arson was the cause of the fire.

This was confirmed by Andrew Holder, the Fire Prevention Officer of the Guyana Fire Service.

A source told News Room that about three weeks earlier, a similar incident had taken place at the school, but was not as serious.

The report was further handed over to the Guyana Police Force who will continue the investigation.

The administrative building housed the offices of teachers, the Head Teacher and Deputy Head Teacher, along with the Computer Laboratory and the Library.

On December 3, 2018, the Diamond Secondary school caught the attention of the media, when the Kaieteur News reported that $107,000 went missing from a safe in the same building – money that was supposed to be used for the student’s graduation ceremony.
