Murder over $5000: Carpenter was killed after head smashed into bus shed

Gavindra Shivpersaud known as ‘Two feet’ of Fyrish Village, Corentyne Berbice appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore Wednesday at the Number 51 Magistrate’s Court, charged with the murder of 21-year-old Navindradat Bhawan called ‘Altaf’ of Lot 54 Number 70 Village, Corentyne Berbice.

Shiverpersaud, 28, did not have legal representation and was not required to plea to the indictable offence which alleged that he murdered the young carpenter on January 11, 2019.

He was remanded to prison until February 21, 2019, when he will make his second court appearance at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court.

Bhawan’s body was found at around 14:00hrs face down on the road of Number 70 Village, Middle Walk.

While a post mortem examination was inconclusive, News Room understands that the accused told the Police that he took the young man’s head and repeatedly banged it against a bus shed after he [Bhawan] refused to repay him $5,000.

The accused reportedly told the Police that he did not expect the young man to die.

The victim’s uncle Mohamed Safraz Noordeen had told News Room that ‘Two Feet’ had visited him three times during the day, saying that Bhawan had taken $5, 000 from him to buy rum and that if he didn’t return it he would be killed.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday the family told News Room they are awaiting permission for the body to be handed over to them to proceed with the burial.
