The LBI, East Coast Demerara man who died Monday night at the hospital after a brief detention at the Sparendaam lockups, was likely beaten to death, a post mortem has found.
Police headquarters Wednesday said Kallicharran Sawack died as a result of “multiple injuries due to blunt trauma about the body.”
The post mortem was done by government pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh.
Sawack was 39-years-old and had a 15-year-old son.
His family had reported him to the Police on Thursday, January 17. He was drunk and was verbally abusing the family. He also broke some windows at the family’s house.
Sawack was being charged and had to spend the weekend in the lockups and attend court the following Monday, January 21.
During the weekend, family and friends took food for him but were not able to see him. The Police collected the food and said they would hand it to him.
On the morning of January 21, the relatives showed up at court and it was then that they were informed that Swack was in the hospital.
According to the family, the Police are claiming that Sawack was behaving in a disorderly manner in the lock-ups and so they placed him in a cell alone when he allegedly “injured” himself.
