A family of five of Lot 3 Fyrish Corentyne, Berbice are contemplating their next move after their house was destroyed by fire on Wednesday afternoon.
Parboo Androod, 51, told News Room that at approximately 14:50 hrs, he was doing some work in the yard when he was alerted of smoke emanating from one of the bedrooms in the upper flat.
“I was at the side mixing cement when my wife called out saying fire deh upstairs, so I left what meh was doing and run upstairs when I kick open the bedroom door the fire was on the bed,” a distraught Androod said.
His efforts to extinguish the flames were futile as the fire rapidly spread throughout the house.
The room where the fire started is vacant and so the family is baffled as to the cause.
He shared the five-bedroom house with his wife, son, daughter-in-law and 6-year-old grandson.
Reality set in for Androod Thursday when he saw a video of his house on fire and broke down in tears. He estimated his losses to be over $20M.
Androod is employed with the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuco) but during out of crop season, he would engage in carpentry work.
He said over the past 28 eight years, he and his wife worked hard to live a comfortable life.
“My wife and me used to go fishing together and every time we sell, we save and do something new every year with the house.”
The family did not manage to save anything.
The Guyana Fire Service is investigating the cause of the fire.
