Driver remanded for horrific ECD accident that killed two women
The driver of a minibus responsible for an accident on Sunday, March 3, 2019, that claimed the life of two vendors was on Tuesday charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving.
Denzil Clarke appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Alisha George where he was remanded to prison until March 15, 2019.
Clarke was the driver of minibus BTT 4910 which crashed into the median at the center of the Success Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD) at about 07:30hrs on Sunday and toppled several times before coming to a halt on the other side of the road.
The accident left two women, 58-year-old Denise Culley of Vigilance, ECD and 59-year-old Patricia Ellis of Haslington, ECD dead.
While Culley died at the scene of the accident after the bus landed on her, Ellis succumbed at the Georgetown Public Hospital while receiving treatment.
Also injured in the accident are Ellis’ grandson, 7-year-old Jaden Miffatt; Laffanna Williams, a 22-year-old Police Constable of lot 175 Haslington, ECD; 60-year-old June Abel of lot 8 Good Hope, ECD; 38-year-old Wayne Blair of lot 38 Fernandez Street, Golden Grove, ECD and 17-year-old Jordon Beaton of Golden Grove, ECD who lost several fingers.
According to a police statement, the minibus driver claimed that a blue motorcar collided with his left rear wheel causing him to lose control and collide with the median in the center of the road.
