Woman posing as mother of murdered Berbice woman arrested collecting donations
As relatives and friends prepare to bid farewell to Omawattie Wazir-Gill who was brutally killed by her husband Saturday last, Police have arrested a woman who is using the tragedy to defraud persons of monies claiming that she is the mother of the deceased and needs money to cover funeral expenses.
News Room understands that a relative of the deceased woman made contact with the Rose Hall Police Outpost on Thursday morning and supplied them with a telephone number of a female who was posing as the mother of Omawattie and accepting donations on behalf of the family to cover funeral and other expenses.
The Police decided to set up a sting operation and caught the suspect.
She was identified as Toomeshwarie Sukhoo called Priya, a 32-year old from Betsy Ground East Cajne. At the time she was arrested, she had collected $13,000.
News Room was told the woman has been making contact with people overseas and soliciting donations on behalf of the family; the matter came to light after a relative spoke with the cousin of the deceased and provided the number of the person with whom he spoke.
Sukhoo remains in police custody while the cash was lodged as evidence and charges are expected to be laid soon.
It is unclear how many donations she collected thus far and how many persons she defrauded. She was using telephone number 670-2716. Anyone who was duped by the woman is asked to contact the Police.
The funeral of Wazir-Gill was held Thursday.
She was struck down by her husband, Gavi Gill, on Saturday last. He then got out of the car and stabbed and chopped her several times about the body as she was making her way to work.
He has since been charged and remanded to prison.
