A 50-year-old man of Warren Village, East Berbice Corentyne is in Police custody after he forcefully removed his wife from a friend’s house and fled the area on Tuesday last.

Martin Baker disappeared with his wife Dhanmattie Sumara known as Jenny and left their two children – aged two and two months old – with a friend.

The News Room learnt that on Friday, June 7, at about 17:30hrs, the Police went to the home of a man identified as Anil Gosai of Enmore North, East Coast Demerara where the couple was found.

The News Room understands that Dhanmattie told investigators Baker “pulled her out of the house” because she refused to give him their child.

She reportedly also told the Police she was never held against her will.

The News Room previously reported that the man was arrested on Friday last after his wife made a report about the constant abuse meted out to her, however, after he was released on Monday, she decided to end the relationship and sought refuge at a friend’s home.

In the wee hours of Tuesday, Baker visited the friend’s house, kicked down the door and dragged his wife into the yard, all the while beating her with a cutlass.

The woman’s friend, Jaipaul Jaimal told the News Room that he and his sons attempted to intervene but were threatened by Baker.

The couple returned to the friend’s house on Tuesday afternoon to collect the children but the Police were contacted and they fled the scene, prompting relatives and friends to fear the worse.
