Woman accused of attempted murder jailed for wounding inmate

A 25-year-old woman, who is on remand for attempted murder was on Tuesday sentenced to nine-months imprisonment for wounding a female prisoner during a fight at the East La Penitence Police Station Holding Centre.

Revelana Smith of Kitty, Georgetown is charged for unlawfully wounding Savita Persaud on April 23, 2019, at the East La Penitence Police Station Holding Centre.

Smith was on trial before City Magistrate Faith McGusty and was found guilty of the charge on Tuesday and was immediately sentenced.

The News Room understands that Smith and Persaud are known to each other since they are inmates at the New Amsterdam Prison.

They got into a fight while at the East La Penitence Police Station; Persaud received injuries to the face and chest.

Smith had told the court that she was annoyed that Persaud received conjugal visits from a male Police Officer and gets special treatment at the prison.

Persaud is currently serving a sentence on two charges of trafficking in-person and is also charged with assaulting Smith; her trial will commence later Tuesday.
