Suspect arrested in murder of taxi driver, claims self-defense
A 48-year-old mason of Cemetery Road Mocha Arcadia, East Bank Demerara was arrested on Wednesday hours after he allegedly stabbed to death 42-year-old Owen Lynch, a taxi driver.
The News Room was reliably informed that the suspect, during questioning, allegedly admitted to Detectives that he stabbed Lynch several times after Lynch attacked him with a “shine object” at Cemetery Road at around 21:45hrs.
The News Room understands that the suspect told Detectives that he walked away from the scene after Lynch collapsed on the road and was later informed that he died.
The suspect reportedly told the Police that he and a friend were drinking at a shop in ‘B’ Field Sophia and later called a taxi from Swift Cab to take him home in Mocha at a fee of $1,500.
The suspect and the taxi driver alone left for Cemetery Road in Mocha Arcadia and according to the suspect, Lynch took the wrong direction to Mocha and so he asked to be taken back to Sophia.
Upon arrival in Sophia, the suspect claimed that his friend convinced him that he should go home with the same driver and so an additional $500 was charged for the extra drive back to Sophia.
The suspect claimed that on their way to Mocha he paid the driver $2,000 as agreed but when they arrived in Mocha, Lynch demanded more money but he refused and exited the car.
As he was walking towards his home, the suspect claimed that Lynch attacked him and he retaliated with a knife which he had in his hands.
Police found an icepick at the crime scene.
