Prison Officers fired as Police hunt escapee

The Guyana Prison Service has fired three Prison Officers following the daring escape of 21-year-old Rameshwar Prakash from the New Amsterdam Prison Farms on Monday at around 07:50hrs.

Gladwin Samuels, the Director of Prisons (ag) in a statement noted that 13 male prisoners were uplifted by two female Prison Officers to labour at the New Amsterdam Prison Farms.

Mr Samuels said the prisoners were working at the Arable ‘B’ which is situated opposite the Prison Officers’ Club.

It is alleged that Prakash, who is serving 18 months jail for larceny, requested to use a washroom that is on the opposite side of the road and from there, he went into a house used by one of the female officers he was working with.

According to the Prison Director, the escapee removed “G$17,000and an electronic tablet from the Officer’s room and made good his escape.”

“Initial investigation suggests that there were breaches of Standing Orders and as a result, three officers have been relieved of their duty. They are required to report to the Prison daily at 08:00 hours, pending the outcome of investigations,” Mr Samuels said in a statement.

Search teams consisting of Police Officers and Prison Officers are deployed to aid in his recapture.

His last known address is lot 53, Princetown, Corentyne, Berbice. The prisoner was due for release on June 20, 2020.
