Two charged with murder of four fishermen

Thirty-year-old Narine Dhanraj and 22-year-old Suresh Sundat, both fishermen of Belvedere Squatting Area in East Berbice, Corentyne, appeared at the Number 51 Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Peter Hugh Wednesday charged with four counts of murder.

It is alleged that between October 5 and 13 in the Corentyne magisterial district, they murdered Vishnu Seeram called ‘Kevin’ 20; Kawal Kissoon called ‘Ajay,’ 36; 20-year-old Marvin Tamessar called ‘Buddy’ and 20-year-old Lamar Petrie, all of Miss Phoebe, Port Mourant.

They were not required to plead to the charge and were remanded to prison until November 7, 2019 when they will appear at the Whim Magistrate’s Court.

A number of family members of the victims were present in court as the men were charged.

The mother of Kissoon wept silently as the charge was read.

The four men were reported missing on October 11 after the boat they left in on October 5 was found abandoned at the Wellington Park Foreshore with bloodstains; the engine and a piece of seine were missing.

The decomposed bodies of Kissoon and Petrie were discovered on the Abary foreshore, Region 5 (Mahaica –Berbice) with their hands and feet tied.

The remains of Seeram and Tamessar are yet to be found. The News Room reported that the men departed the Number 65 Village Wharf for a fishing trip to Suriname on October 5 and were scheduled to return in 14 days.

Dhanraj and Sundat were arrested on Friday and after intense grilling, they revealed that three men attacked, beat, chopped, bound and then dumped the fishermen overboard after forcing them to hand over their small catch of fish.
