Berbice robbery: Gunmen beat businessman, nephew; stolen car recovered
Six armed gunmen on Saturday night wreaked havoc in the small community of Betsy Ground, East Canje Berbice when they invaded the Chennick and Sons Supermarket, Western Outlet and a Superbet facility.
The gunmen escaped with the owner’s Toyota Verossa car, an undisclosed sum of cash and a small quantity of jewellery.
The vehicle PSS 1113 was found abandoned at Speculation, East Canje a short while after Police gave chase Saturday evening; it is currently at the Reliance Police Station.
Based on surveillance footage seen by the News Room, six masked men exited a white Toyota Allion at around 19:30hrs and hurriedly made their way into the supermarket which had a number of customers.
The customers were held at gunpoint and ordered to lie on the ground face down.
The bandits asked specifically asked for the owner and his sons.
When the News Room visited the scene Sunday the owner, 45-year-old Doodnauth Moses called ‘Chunnick’ was resting; he was gun-butted to the head and beaten by the bandits
During the eight-minute attack, the gunmen escaped with an undisclosed sum of cash, two gold chains and two rings from Moses.
The owner’s 14-year-old nephew was also gun-butted to head and had to receive four stitches.
Moses’ wife was lost for words as she broke down in tears. She told the News Room that she prayed during the robbery and hoped that the bandits did not kill anyone.
The News Room understands the bandits were armed with four rifles, one shotgun and a revolver. Approximately 25 shots were fired during the robbery and numerous bullet holes were visible around the supermarket
No one has been arrested.
