A Friendship, Wakenaam Island, Region Three resident who on Saturday afternoon set his wife alight, did so in front of his 15-year-old daughter before committing suicide.
According to the Police, at about 17:05hrs on Saturday, 56-year-old Rabindranauth Harrinarine, a labourer, doused his reputed wife of nine years, 43-year-old Sattie Looknauth with kerosene and set her alight using a lighter.
Reports are that the woman was sitting with her 15-year-old daughter on the verandah while Harinarine was in a hammock under the house.
The man subsequently went to the verandah and an argument ensued during which he committed the act.
Harinarine fled the scene leaving the 15-year-old to extinguish the flames.
The woman was rushed to the Wakenaam Cottage Hospital by relatives where she was admitted a patient and later transferred to the West Demerara Hospital.
Police found Harrinarine hanging from a tree a short distance away.
Looknauth was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she remains in a critical condition.
Investigations are ongoing.
