Police recover guns, live cartridges following murder of Brazilian gold miner

Police here are continuing their investigations into the murder of 58-year-old Brazilian national Fredson Da Conceicao who was killed during a shootout with six bandits on Friday last at Marudi Mining area, South Rupununi.

Police Headquarters revealed that the gunmen are suspected to be foreign nationals. Investigations so far revealed that the gold miner resided in a building which is partly built and contained a safe.

About 17:00h on April 24, he was sitting at his door when the suspects approached and began to shoot indiscriminately at him.

In retaliation, Fredson drew his licensed pistol and returned fire. In the end, Fredson and one of the suspects were found motionless.

They were taken to the Aishalton Hospital and were pronounced dead on arrival.

Traces of blood were seen which led to an old pit where Police found a 12-gauge shotgun loaded with five cartridges and a plastic bag containing 12 live cartridges.

Police also found a black face mask and a GPS in the pants of the suspect along with his firearm while Fredson’s firearm was found next to his body.

The contents of the safe were removed.
