Commonwealth calls for leaders to abide by recount results

The Secretary-General of the 54-nation Commonwealth Patricia Scotland says The Commonwealth continues to pay keen attention to the national recount of ballots cast in Guyana on March 2, 2020, and urged political leaders to accept the results.

In a twitter post on Saturday, Scotland said, “.@Commonwealthsec continues to pay close attention to the electoral process in #Guyana & commends the people of [Guyana] for their patience during the recount process.

“I thank the Government & Opposition leaders for committing themselves to respect & adhere to the recount results.”

When Guyana commenced the recount process on May 6, the Commonwealth SG had urged for the full transparency and adherence to the rule of law, noting that it is vital to the credibility of the electoral process.”

The recount of the 2,339 ballot boxes is expected to conclude Sunday and so far, the tabulation shows that the Opposition People’s Progressive Party ahead by 14, 317 votes.
