A boat captain who was Tuesday caught with three others fetching ganja in the Berbice River grabbed on to the Policeman who arrested him and jumped overboard; the Policeman was rescued but the captain escaped.
The Policeman lost his gun in the process.
The Police were conducting a river patrol in the Canje Creek when they intercepted a wooden vessel in the vicinity of Sandaka with four men. They included the captain who goes by the name “Royo” of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
A search of the boat revealed nine taped and compressed parcels containing suspected cannabis. When weighed, the illegal drugs amounted to a total of 103 kilogrammes.
The men were all arrested and were being escorted to New Amsterdam.
The three suspects in custody are from Charlestown and East Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
They are being processed for court and stringent efforts are being made to recapture the escapee.
