76-Y-0 woman dies from COVID-19 at GPHC

A 76-year-old woman has been recorded as Guyana’s 16th COVID-19 death.

The Ministry of Public Health Monday night revealed that May Portsmouth died on Sunday, July 5 at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

“Sincere condolences are extended to her family, relatives and friends,” said Imran Khan, Director of the Department of Public Information (DPI) in a three-sentence statement.

The Ministry of Public Health did not reveal whether the patient was tested before or after her death nor did they state her address.

The Ministry also did not state whether the patient was hospitalised at GPHC for some time nor did they explain the circumstances surrounding her death.

Guyana continues to see a steady increase in the number of COVID-19 cases and in the past eight days, four persons have now died.

Just two days ago, a 25-year-old teacher of the Arapaima Nursery School in Lethem, Region Nine who was air-dashed to the Georgetown Public Hospital to treat a blood disorder died from the disease.

Donna Ambrose Greaves, a mother of a 7-year-old boy was recorded as Guyana’s 15th COVID-19 death, less than a week after two others died from the same disease.

The country’s 14th COVID-19 death was a 34-year-old father of three of Bartica. Abdool Khan died at the Georgetown Public Hospital on July 2; he too was in the COVID-19 ICU since June 22.

His three-year-old child is among those tested positive for the deadly disease in Bartica. Just two days prior to Khan’s death, Guyana recorded its 13th COVID-19 death at the GPHC.

That individual was identified as 42-year-old Bent Street, Albouystown resident.

Kevin Ridley was referred to Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital on Monday, June 29 by another health facility. He had complained of shortness of breath and so doctors at the hospital conducted a COVID-19 test on him but he died hours later the same day at the hospital.

As of July 6, Guyana recorded five new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 278.

Ten persons remain in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital.

There are now 142 active cases in institutional isolation and 19 persons in institutional quarantine. To date, there are 121 recoveries.
