Army deployed to Lusignan prison

Ranks of the Guyana Defence Force have been deployed to assist members of the Police Force, Fire and Prison Services who battled a huge inferno at the Lusignan Prison facility on the East Coast of Demerara.

The News Room understands that a section of the prison was completely destroyed. It is unclear if there are any deaths or injuries at this time.

The GDF helicopter and several ambulances are currently at the scene along with fire tenders. Reports indicate that ranks had just concluded a raid at the prison and seized contraband after which the prisoners protested.

The fire started shortly after. Residents recalled hearing the screams of prisoners.
