The driver of the canter involved in the horrific early morning accident on the Vryheid’s Lust Public Road, East Coast Demerara suffered a heart attack.

Police Headquarters could not say if the 52-year-old resident of One Mile Hill Foot, Soesdyke Linden Highway suffered the heart attack before or after the accident which claimed the life of a garbage collector.

The accident occurred Tuesday at about 05:30h; Police reported that the canter GWW 9841 crashed into 45-year-old Xavier Isfehani, severing both his legs and killing him on the spot.

Isfehani of Leonora, West Coast Demerara (WCD) was employed with Puran Brothers Disposal. He was working behind the garbage truck at the time of the accident and was also wearing a reflector vest.

CCTV footage shows that the canter was speeding along the public road and it appears that the driver fell asleep.

The driver and a passenger Wendell Cort, 46, of Kuru Kururu, Soesdyke were both pinned inside the canter; the Guyana Fire Service took about an hour to cut the canter to get the men out.

The driver received injuries about the body while Cort suffered a broken leg. They were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital and admitted to the male surgical ward.
