Taxi driver busted with over 30 pounds of ganja charged

A 40-year-old taxi driver of Durban and Smyth Streets, Georgetown was on Friday charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

Eon Weeks appeared at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Fabayo Azore and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

He was granted $75,000 bail. The matter is adjourned and was transferred to the Mahaicony Magistrate Court for November 09.

Weeks along with a 20-year-old female of ‘A’ Field Sophia were arrested on October 13 after they were found in possession of 33.9 pounds of cannabis.

Police in a statement said the duo were in a motorcar which was intercepted at a roadblock at Mahaicony Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

The police said ranks stopped the car and searched the two persons at about 03:30h but found nothing on the suspects.

However, a search of the motorcar unearthed two large bags containing seven compressed bulky transparent plastic with leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis. The packages were found in the trunk of the vehicle.
