Robbery suspect who shot at cops arrested at private hospital
Robbery suspect, 24-year-old, William De Abreu, was arrested at the Woodlands Hospital in Georgetown hours after he was involved in crossfire with ranks of the Guyana Police Force.
De Abreu received a gunshot wound to his left leg and went to seek medical attention at the private hospital; two other persons who took him to the hospital were also arrested.
Regional Commander, Senior Superintendent Mahendra Siwnarine told the News Room that an alert was sent to all hospitals and the protocol for treating gunshot injuries were followed. De Abreu is wanted in connection with a series of robberies between Mahaica and Vigilance, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Police Headquarters on Monday reported that ranks received a tip and intercepted the motorcar he was driving at Church Road, Bachelor’s Adventure, ECD.
Police said the ranks were on mobile patrol duties at the time and signaled De Abreu to stop, but he attempted to drive away and ended up crashing into the police vehicle. Police said De Abreu then opened the driver’s door and discharged a round in the direction of the ranks, who then returned fire.
He then exited the vehicle and began exchanging fire with the ranks and subsequently escaped in an unoccupied yard. De Abreu and the two others were arrested at about 01:00h on Tuesday and taken to the Brickdam Police Station and subsequently transferred to Cove and John Headquarters for further investigation. The car was also lodged for analysis at the Cove and John Police Station.
