Four persons are now in police custody for the alleged rape and brutal beating of a 98-year-old woman of Rose Hall Town, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).

Police Headquarters in a statement said two labourers, a 24-year-old and a 23-year-old, were first arrested on Tuesday. A 38-year-old fisherman and a 53-year-old labourer were later arrested. All four suspects are also from Rose Hall Town.

Residents on Tuesday expressed outrage over the assault of the elderly woman and called on the police to provide more patrol and security in the town.

The News Room understands that the elderly woman lives alone and was discovered in a battered state by her caregiver. The caregiver explained that the woman said the she was beaten, choked and that the suspects pushed their hands down her throat.

The caregiver didn’t immediately suspect that the elderly woman was raped; it was only when she was dressing her to go to the hospital that she noticed her underwear was torn and there was blood.

The caregiver later found a bloodstained sheet, and subsequently contacted the police.

According to the caregiver, the police, however, did not provide any help and upon arrival at the scene, they told the caregiver to take the elderly woman to the hospital and to contact them if she has more information.
