Guyana’s COVID-19 death increased to 284 with a third death recorded,

The latest fatality is one 55-year-old female from Region 3 (Essequibo Islands- West Demerara) who died while receiving care at a medical facility on Saturday, April 24. Earlier, two other deaths were reported and the death toll for April is now 51.

Simultaneously, a total of 103 new infections were also recorded from 1,344 tests, taking the country’s overall number of confirmed cases to 12,703.

The majority of new infections were recorded in Region Four with 49 new cases with Region Two coming in second with 23 new cases.

New infections were also recorded in the following Regions: Region Ten – one new case; Regional Nine – three new cases; Region Six – six new cases; Region One – one new case; Region Five – seven new cases; and Region Three – 13 new cases.

To date, 10,786 persons have recovered.

There are 1,548 patients in home isolation, 73 patients in institutional isolation, and 12 patients are in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit at the Infectious Diseases Hospital.

April is now the deadliest month for COVID-19 since the pandemic hit these shores. Previously, October 2020 was the deadliest month for Guyana since the pandemic started in March 2020 with 44 deaths.

Guyana is experiencing a more deadly wave of the virus, the Ministry of Health had previously noted.
