Two additional persons have died from the disease – COVID-19 – taking the total number of deaths recorded since March 11, 2020, to 382 while 83 deaths have been recorded in the month of May alone.
The latest fatalities, according to the Ministry of Health, are a 73-year-old male from Region Four (4) (Demerara-Mahaica) and 67-year-old woman from Region Three (3) (East Berbice- Corentyne).
They both died on May 28, 2021, while receiving care at a medical facility.
Already, there have been 83 deaths in the month of May, making this the deadliest month of the pandemic. April 2021, was previously the deadliest month with a total of 66 deaths.
In addition to the new deaths recorded, 98 new people were infected with COVID-19 over a 24-hour period. The new infections came from 1,218 tests.
This means that 16,822 people have been infected with the disease since March last year.
The new cases were recorded in Region One (three cases), Region Three (16 cases), Region Four (40 cases), Region Five (seven cases), Region Six (20 cases), Region Seven ( Three cases), Region Eight (one case) Region Nine (two cases) and Region Ten (six cases).
Importantly, there are also 22 people in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), which treats those infected individuals who are severely ill. There are also 109 people in institutional isolation, 1,841 are in home isolation and two in institutional quarantine.
