As hundreds of families remain displaced and impacted by floodwaters countrywide, the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) Guyana on Wednesday made a donation of several items to the Ministry of Human Services for distribution to vulnerable families affected.
In a statement on Thursday, the Chamber said it hopes that this contribution would add to those already provided by other organizations and private citizens and support from the Government of Guyana to bring relief to those affected.
“Many families, businesses, and even entire communities along the coast and the hinterland regions have been dramatically impacted because of the historic rains over the past few days, the membership of AMCHAM Guyana and volunteers have come together, in a big way to help our neighbors who are in desperate need,” said Chairman of AMCHAM Guyana, Zulfikar Ally.
Meanwhile, Minister of Human Services and Social Security Dr. Vindhya Persaud has expressed gratitude to AmCham for assisting with the effort and has called on more of corporate Guyana to come forward during this time of need.
She said: “The Government of Guyana has from the beginning of the rainy season and resultant floods been very involved in going out there and ensuring that people are safe and being cared for. The Ministry of Human Services is contributing to the wider governmental effort which has been spearheaded by President Irfaan Ali and Prime Minister Mark Phillips.”
“We will continue to expend every effort to assist families and persons hard hit by flooding as their lives in many cases have been upturned and they have suffered immeasurable losses and serious damage to property and crops. It is these trying moments that must bring all Guyanese together to help and support each other.”
With additional heavy rain and storms forecast in the coming days, the Chamber said it will continuously monitor humanitarian needs throughout the Regions affected and will work closely with local emergency authorities to provide additional relief.
AmCham Guyana also reiterated the chamber’s commitment to serving Guyana in all spheres of development and the chamber remains open to further assistance should the need arise in this crisis or future events.
