Three men and one woman have died from the COVID-19 disease, taking the total number of deaths recorded since the pandemic began in March 2020 to 430; a total of 32 deaths have thus been recorded this month alone.
The Ministry of Health reported that the latest fatalities are:
- A 76-year- old woman from Region Four (Demerara- Mahaica) who died on June 13
- A 39-year-old man from Region 10 (Upper Demerara- Berbice) who died on June 13
- A male 78-year-old man from Region Six (East Berbice- Corentyne) who died on June 12
- A 54-year-old man, also from Region Six, who died on June 13
According to the Health Ministry, the patients were admitted with COVID-19 like symptoms but died while receiving care at our medical institutions. Samples were taken at the time of admission which subsequently returned positive tests.
On Sunday, the News Room was able to confirm that the Vice-Chairman of Region 10, Douglas Gittens passed away after he became infected with COVID-19 and was hospitalised.
Meanwhile, another 60 people were tested positive, taking the total number of cases recorded since last March to 18,446. These new infections were recorded from 520 tests.
The 60 infections were drawn from: Region One (three cases), Region Three (seven cases), Region Four (24 cases), Region Five (one case), Region Six (19 cases) and Region 10 (six cases).
There are also 1,742 active cases; 60 of these cases are in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 120 are in institutional isolation and 1,562 are in home isolation.
Aside from the infected people, there are 33 newly-recovered people, taking the total number of recoveries to 16,313.
