Opposition Member of Parliament (MP) Annette Ferguson is expected to appear at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Friday over a social media post she made in relation to a killing squad.
The charge is being instituted on the advice of the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Following her arrest on June 30, 2021, in relation to the allegation under the Cyber Crime Act of Guyana, a file was sent by detectives to the DPP for advice.
That file was returned on Wednesday, instructing the police to proceed with the charges, a brief statement from Police Headquarters revealed.
According to the police report, Ferguson will be charged with using a computer system to humiliate a person, contrary to section 195(5) (a) of the Cybercrime Act No. 16 of 2018.
According to a police release, the allegation was made by a senior member of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF). The police said that Ferguson reportedly made a post on Facebook “which falsely stated” that the senior GDF rank will be in charge of a “killing squad”.
