Thirteen people are now homeless following the Alberttown, Georgetown fire at an apartment complex that claimed the lives of two foreign nationals on Thursday morning.

This information was related by the Guyana Fire Service in a press release.

The two foreign nationals who died were identified as 25-year-old Maria Lina Texidor Alonso and 44-year-old Maria Alejandra Patiño Benjamin.

The release said that firefighters responded to the fire after a call was received at 08:46 hrs. Three fire tenders and an ambulance were reportedly dispatched to location.

“Hydrants in the vicinity were serviceable but an adjacent open source of water was used to extinguish the fire,” the fire service said, however.

Meanwhile, it was also reported that once the fire was extinguished, it was discovered that the two women had been trapped inside the heavily grilled building and died as a result.

An assessment afterwards found that the top floor of the building was severely damaged while the ground floor suffered water damages. As a result, the 13 other residents are now homeless.
