Man who attempted to kill wife and boarded flight to U.S. sent back

The Corentyne, Berbice man who reportedly set his wife on fire and tried to flee to the United States was sent back on a flight early Wednesday morning.

Local Police treated the matter as attempted murder.

The man Ganesh Sewcharran managed to board an American Airlines flight to the USA at 17:26 hrs on Tuesday the 14th September 2021.

But local Police found out and contacted law enforcement officials in the USA and informed them that the suspect was wanted.

Crime Chief Wendell Blannum in a statement said that once Sewcharran landed in the U.S> he was denied entry and sent back on a flight to Guyana. That flight arrived at 06:54 hrs on Wednesday. Once he arrived in Guyana, he was arrested and placed in custody.

The News Room had reported that late Sunday night, the man and his wife got into an argument and she doused herself with kerosene.

Sewcharran reportedly took the lighter from his wife and lit the bottom of her dress.
The woman reacted by rolling on the ground, effectively extinguishing the fire. By that time, however, she received burns all over her body.

Subsequently, she was rushed to Port Mourant Public Hospital where she was examined by a doctor on duty and later transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. There, she was admitted as a patient and is in a critical condition.
