A confrontation at the Vreed-en-Hoop Stelling, West Coast Demerara late Saturday night has left one brother dead and another seriously injured.
The dead man has been identified 26-year-old Sigmol Gouveia of Block ‘A’ Sophia, Greater Georgetown while the injured brother has been identified as 37-year-old Neville Gouveia.
Neville is employed as a security guard at the Dock Yard. According to the police, at about 23:10hrs, a boat arrived at the stelling with three unknown males: one of the males exited the vessel while the remaining two took the boat out on the river.
A short while after, there was a verbal confrontation between Sigmol and the suspect that exited the boat; the suspect was told that he cannot use the area for passage.
The suspect was further advised to call the boat to pick him up from the premises, which he reportedly did.
But another argument ensued between the two and the suspect stabbed Sigmol to his abdomen causing him to fall to the ground in an unconscious state, police said.
The victim’s brother then approached the suspect but he too received stab wounds to his right upper arm and chest.
The boat then returned shortly after with over 10 people on board. They were all armed with pieces of wood and cutlasses. They collected the suspect and headed across the river.
Both victims were picked up by the police and taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where Sigmol was pronounced dead, while his brother was admitted a patient.
