An investigation into the fire which destroyed a flat concrete house in Blueberry Hill, Wismar, Linden, has found that the five children who were trapped were allegedly playing with a lighter inside one of the bedrooms.

According to the probe by the Guyana Fire Service, while the children were playing on the bed, the lighter fell on the mattress and it caught on fire. Police Headquarters had initially reported that the house was set on fire by person (s) unknown.

The house and everything inside were destroyed. Luckily, the children were saved by a neighbour who heard them screaming and subsequently saw smoke emanating from the house.

The fire started at about 11:45hrs on Thursday and reports indicate that the children were locked inside the house. At the time of the incident, the children were alone while their mother 35-year-old Orlene Holder left to visit a school.

When the News Room contacted the mother on Friday she said she was too traumatised to speak about the incident.
