Canter slams head-on into car killing Linden couple

Fifty-year-old Carl Craig, the driver of a canter truck was arrested after he slammed head-on into motorcar PXX 8815, killing Linden couple – Nicholas Valcin, 42, and Olisa Valcin, 31 on Thursday afternoon. A 20-year-old man identified as Shaquel Williams of Blueberry Hill, Linden who was in the car with the couple, was also injured.

Police Headquarters reported that the accident occurred on Thursday at about 14:45hrs along the Caledonia Public Road, East Bank Demerara.

According to reports, the canter was proceeding north along the western side of Caledonia Public Road, while the motorcar was proceeding in the opposite direction.

Police said while both vehicles were approaching a landfill site, on the western side of the road, an unknown truck transporting sand was reserving in the middle of the road; as a result, Craig tried to pass the sand truck and ended up in the lane of the car and collided head-on.

Police said the couple received severe injuries about their bodies; they were both unconscious while being transported to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre and died while receiving treatment. Olisa was heavily pregnant at the time of the accident.

The 20-year-old was subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he is nursing injuries.

A breathalyzer test conducted on the driver of the canter found no traces of alcohol.

Meanwhile, family and friends have taken to social media to mourn the deaths. The News Room understands the couple also have other children.

Olisa was a secondary school teacher at the Wisburg Secondary School in Linden; she also served as the STEM Guyana leader for the Wisburg Learning Pod Club; she was also a Scout leader.
