A 67-year-old man of No. 72 Village, Corentyne was killed after a speeding driver collided with him along the No. 72 Public Road on Tuesday.
Dead is Roopnarine Ramoutar. Police Headquarters reported that the accident occurred at about 17:45hrs; Ramoutor was driving an electric cycle.
The driver was identified as Diaram Persaud, 52, of No. 74 Village. Police said he was speeding along the public road on the eastern side in canter truck GHH 7458, while Ramoutar was proceeding in the opposite direction.
Police said Ramoutar made a sudden right turn into the path of the canter resulting in the collision.
As a result of the impact, Ramoutar flung off the cycle and was thrown some distance away. The cycle was stuck under the canter which stopped some 300 feet away.
Ramoutar was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Skeldon Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
A breathalyzer test conducted on Persaud showed no traces of alcohol. He has been arrested and is in custody assisting with the investigation.
