Guyana continues to record a high number of positive COVID-19 cases with 657 new infections from 2, 212 tests within 24hrs.
Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) accounts for the majority of the new cases with 345 cases. The new infections push the total number of confirmed cases since March 2020 to 44, 902.
In addition to the new cases, three more persons died from the virus. According to a release from the Ministry of Health, two unvaccinated persons died on January 8 and a fully vaccinated woman died on December 23, 2021.
This means that a total of 15 persons died for January thus far and December 2021 death toll has now increased to 55.
Overall, a total of 1, 070 persons have died since March 2020.

Meanwhile, the following regions also recorded new infections; Region One (13 cases), Region Two (18 cases), Region Three (89 cases), Region Five (six cases), Region Six (67 cases), Region Seven (35 cases), Region Eight (eight cases), Region Nine (43 cases) and Region Ten (33 cases).
There are currently five persons in the Intensive Care Unit; 107 are institutional isolation and 5, 787 are in home isolation.
To date, 37,933 persons have recovered from the disease.
