Special Corporal Dawn Booker was crushed to death early on Monday after she lost control of her pedal cycle, fell onto the road, and was run over by a truck.
The accident occurred at about 08:15hrs at the La Penitence Market in Georgetown.
Police said that Booker, 57, of Perseverance, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara was heading in a southern direction while another cyclist was heading in the opposite direction. CCTV footage captured the entire incident and shows the exact moment when both cyclists passed each other and Booker lost control and fell.
The truck was being driven by a 26-year-old from No. 47 Village, Corentyne Berbice.
Police Headquarters reported that Booker sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The body was taken to Memorial Gardens Funeral Parlour awaiting a post mortem examination.
The driver of the canter tested negative for alcohol and is in custody assisting with the investigation.
