Twenty-year-old Christopher Bhagwandat of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, has been identified as one of two persons who died in the four-vehicle smash-up on Wednesday at the Mahaica Bridge, East Coast Demerara.
One of Bhagwandat’s relatives spoke with reporters at the horrific scene and revealed that he had travelled to Berbice to pick up his girlfriend to celebrate his mother’s birthday. The News Room understands that the girlfriend was also killed in the accident.
“Today is his mom birthday and he [told his mother] he going and bring she (his girlfriend),” the tearful relative explained. Bhagwandat would have celebrated his 22nd birthday later this month and it was only four months ago that the family lost another member of the family.
Bhagwandat was the driver of the blue Allion car (PNN 8852) involved in the accident; the other vehicles included a police vehicle, a fielder wagon and a canter truck.
Police Headquarters in a brief update hours after the accident revealed that three police ranks were injured and were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The accident occurred on the western end of the Mahaica Bridge.
From videos circulating on social media, firefighters were seen removing the bodies from the wreckage.
