Dynamic all-rounder Romario Shepherd on Sunday secured a huge deal at the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, Sunrisers Hyderabad doling out 7.75 crore (US$1,030,750) for the Guyana and West Indies cricketer.
The 27-year-old joined countryman Shimron Hetmyer (US$1.13 million), Trinidad and Tobago wicketkeeper/batsman Nicholas Pooran (US$1.43 million) and Barbados all-rounder Jason Holder (US$1.16 million) as the West Indians who copped million dollar contracts at the auction.
The franchises were involved in a bidding war for Shepherd with Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants, Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals all expressing interest in the Berbician.
Shepherd had entered the auction at a base price of US$99,130.
Another Guyanese all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford was sold to Royal Challengers Bangalore, securing a contract at his base price of US$132,200, while exciting Jamaican all-rounder Odean Smith went to Punjab Kings for US$796,000.
In total, 17 West Indian players will turn out in IPL 2022 with all 10 franchises having at least one player from the Caribbean.
