Labourer charged with murder of overseas-based Guyanese

A 26-year-old labourer appeared at the No. 51 Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday charged with the murder of overseas-based Guyanese Lakhan Chaterpal. 

Eon Gonsalves known as ‘Belly’ of Grant 1802 Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore and was not required to plea to the charge; he was remanded to prison until May 31, 2022.

Gonsalves was arrested on Wednesday last. Police Headquarters reported that two other suspects remain at large.

Chaterpal, 21, who travelled to Guyana for his brother’s wedding, was stabbed to death in the wee hours of March 9. The incident occurred at Crabwood Creek, Corentyne.

Chaterpal of Ohio, United States was stabbed to his lower abdomen during an altercation with three men following a family party. It is alleged that the three suspects – who are not related to the family – showed up at the house.

As such, the family asked the three suspects to leave; they left but decided to damage several vehicles that were parked outside.

As a result, Chaterpal and the rest of the family confronted the men during which he was stabbed.
