GISE renews support of GCA First-Division Two-Day cricket
General Industrial and Supplies Enterprise (GISE) this week renewed its partnership with the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) for the upcoming 2022 edition of the First-Division Two-Day cricket tournament.
The Church Street business establishment has teamed up with Star Party Rentals and the Trophy Stall to stage the tournament for a third time, having previously collaborated in 2018 and 2019.
The competition is expected to start as early as this weekend, given the availability of grounds in the city.
At a simple presentation ceremony, GCA President Neil Barry and GISE representative Verlene Van Lange spoke briefly about the partnership.
Barry said the GCA and its executives are extremely grateful to GISE for its continued support, as the sponsorship helps to meaningfully aid the development process in the Association.
The GCA head labelled the First-Division competition as significant, as it helps the Association to prepare its players for the Inter-County competition, national duties and ultimately West Indies.
“And the Two-Day version is where the players learn how to craft their skills and that is how they become Test cricketers. It also helps in even preparing for the shorter versions- T20s and 50-over,” Barry said.
Van Lange pointed out that the sponsorship was birthed through the benevolence of founder of GISE Yadram Rajkumar, who wanted to create opportunities for youngsters to excel in sport, something he wasn’t afforded as a youngster.
“More importantly, this sponsorship will facilitate some young man who is willing to accept the challenge of developing his skill at cricket and to use this platform to aspire to even becoming a future member of the West Indies cricket team,” Van Lange declared.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, no competition was held in 2020 and 2021. The 2019 tournament was only completed this year, with Demerara Cricket Club defeating Georgetown Cricket Club in the final.
