A 23-year-old storage attendant, who is attached to the Ministry of Health bond at Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was on Friday remanded to prison on four firearm-related charges along with attempting to bribe a police officer.

Terrence Williams called ‘Terry’ of Farm, EBD, appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Golden Grove Magistrates’ Court to face five charges.

Particulars of the four firearm-related charges alleged that Williams, on March 21, at the Ministry of Health Drugs Bond at Diamond, had a nine millimetres (mm) Luger pistol, two rounds of 9MM ammunition, a .380 pistol along with 27 matching rounds.

The last charge alleged that on the same date and location, Williams allegedly attempted to obstruct or pervert the course of justice by offering police officer Leon George $1.7 million to forego an investigation against him.

He pleaded not guilty to all of the charges and was represented by attorneys-at-law Dexter Todd and Dexter Smartt, who made an application for reasonable bail.

According to Todd, three of Williams’ friends had borrowed his car hours before his client was arrested.

Based on this, Todd said there is the issue of multiple occupancies of the car since his client did not have knowledge and possession of firearms and ammunition.

However, Police Prosecutor Corporal Hemchand Sukhna objected to Williams being released on bail citing the nature, gravity, and seriousness of the charges.

He also said that the police investigation into the theft of drugs from the storage bond is still ongoing.

Magistrate Scarce remanded the father of four to prison until April 28. On Monday, police responded to a simple larceny report at the bond when they made the discovery of the illegal guns and ammo along with a duffel bag containing $4.5 million of cash inside Williams’ car.

According to the police, while being questioned about the items, the storage attendant reportedly offered to bribe the police with $1.7 million in cash.

It is also alleged that Williams is part of a criminal enterprise that steal the drugs from the bond.
