Two drivers are in police custody following the death of a 19-year-old boy who was struck down on the Craig Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD) on Saturday night.
Dead is Sachin Persaud of Avenue ‘A’, Diamond, EBD. Police Headquarters revealed that Persaud and another person were crossing the road when he was struck down by PXX 2746, owned and driven by 47-year-old Leslie Griffith of South Ruimveldt, Georgetown. Almost immediately, he was run over by PXX 8548, owned and driven by 49-year-old Vanburn Milo of Kaneville, EBD.
Footage from a CCTV camera showed the persons crossing the road when Persaud abruptly stopped before making it across while the other person ran over. The accident occurred at about 20:00hrs.
Griffith told police that he was driving north and while in the vicinity of Natram’s General Store, he observed the two pedestrians crossing the road from east to west. He claimed that he applied brakes and swerved east to avoid a collision but due to the short distance, the left side rearview mirror collided with the male pedestrian.
Meanwhile, Milo alleged that he was proceeding south and while in the vicinity of Natram’s General Store, he noticed two cars swerved east into his lane, and so, he applied brakes and swerved west to avoid a collision when he ran over the victim.
The ambulance service was summoned from the Diamond Fire Station with a team of Emergency Medical Technicians headed by Doctor Reid who pronounced Persaud dead at the scene.
The body of the deceased is presently lying at Carmen’s Funeral Parlour awaiting post mortem examination.
Notices of intended prosecution have been prepared and served on both drivers and a breathalyzer test conducted found no trace of alcohol in their systems.
“They both remain in custody assisting with further investigations,” police said.
