A fight between two prisoners at the Lusignan Prison over ‘bed space’ has resulted in the death of murder accused Mahase Rajpaul. The Guyana Prison Service reported that the suspect, Rajkumar Singh, who is also accused of murder has been taken into isolation.
The incident occurred at about 14:50hrs in the Prison’s Holding Bay One. Rajpaul was stabbed to his chest and died while receiving medical treatment.
Investigations revealed that Rajpaul and Singh got into an argument when Singh accused Rajpaul of walking on his ‘bed space’. As a result, the two got into a fight during which Rajpaul was stabbed.
The Prison Service said an alarm was raised by inmates in the Holding Bay.
The report noted that officers responded swiftly, extracted Rajpaul and provided first aid. He was then taken to the Prison Infirmary and referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
“The Melanie Fire Station ambulance responded to the emergency; and assisted in stabilising Rajpaul for transport.”
“However, he succumbed during the process,” the Prison Service stated.
Meanwhile, the improvised weapon was found after a search of the Holding Bay.
Director of Prison (ag) Nicklon Elliot said while the incident is unfortunate, the Prison Service continues to acknowledge the importance of anger management classes in the reduction of prisoner-to-prisoner violence.
He noted weekly sessions with the inmates will continue; urging them to address their issues in accordance with prison rules and highlighting the consequences of violence in prison.
Additionally, random prison searches will also continue to retrieve any improvised weapons which may be concealed.
