A woman who reportedly stabbed a four-year-old girl appeared in court on Thursday charged with attempted murder and was granted bail.

Police Headquarters reported that Padmini Dwarka of Lot 185 Cemetery Road, Timehri, East Bank Demerara appeared at the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Judy Latchman.

She was not required to enter a plea and was granted $150,000 bail; the case was adjourned to May 17, 2022.

The stabbing occurred on April 10 at Dwarka’s address but she only turned herself in to the police two days later in the presence of her lawyer.

The little girl was stabbed to her left side abdomen; she is in a critical but stable condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Police reported that Dwarka and the child’s mother are in a relationship; on Sunday last the couple got into a heated argument.

Police said the mother collected her child and told the suspect that she was leaving “because she is frustrated with the repetitive arguments between them.”

Police claimed that the suspect then armed herself with a knife, approached the child’s mother, and attempted to stab her but instead ended up injuring the child.

Police said the suspect escaped after committing the act. The child was then taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre and subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
