The Aubrey Barker Road that runs through South Ruimveldt in Georgetown will see upgrades shortly and will be developed as another access point for Central Georgetown, Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal said on Monday while meeting with residents.

The Aubrey Barker Road will be developed to link the new Cummings Lodge Housing Scheme on the East Coast of Demerara to the East Bank of Demerara.

“There are long-term plans for the development of Aubrey Barker Road,” Croal said.

“Aubrey Barker Road in the medium term will have its own upgrade and infrastructural developments because Aubrey Barker… will take up greater importance,” the Minister added.

The government has a massive road expansion plan expected to be completed by 2025, this will support ongoing urban development and the establishment of Guyana’s new Silica City.

These road projects are expected to relieve some of the traffic congestion woes faced by commuters like the recently completed Mandela to Eccles four-lane highway with plans to build a highway Ogle, ECD to Eccles, EBD.

A new four-lane highway will also be built from Crane on the West Coast of Demerara to Schoonord on the West Bank of Demerara; the government has already invited bids for this project.

Four-lane highways would also be established in several areas along the East Coast of Demerara (ECD), through Georgetown, on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD), and in Region Six.

On the East Coast, expanded roads are expected to provide easy access to forthcoming industrial development at La Bonne Intention (LBI) and Foulis.
