A total of 1,580 grams (3.4 pounds) of marijuana was seized during a search at the Mazaruni Prison on Tuesday in Region Seven.
A number of other prohibited items were also found and includes: 17 smartphones and four chargers, 22 packs of cigarettes, 24 improvised weapons, six scissors, two broken mirrors, two smoking utensils and two knives.
The search was conducted between 05:00hrs and 11:00hrs by ranks of the Bartica Police Station and prison officers, Police Headquarters revealed in a statement.
The Security Blocks, Special Watch, Condemn Section, Stores, Infirmary, and Dormitory were searched.
“While searching the upper dormitory, a Prison Officer found a black plastic bag lodged in the sealing of the structure. Upon further examination, the said bag also contained a quantity of leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis (marijuana),” the police said.
