Shortly after a peaceful protest turned fiery and spread to several villages along the East Coast of Demerara (EDC), President Irfaan Ali has called for an end to the demonstration.

The President’s comments, broadcast live on Facebook Tuesday morning, come as the police have also taken up tactical positions along the ECD corridor with the hope of clearing the roadways and allowing hundreds of stranded people passage to work and home.

“Go home, clear the roadways and allow the system to work,” Dr. Ali said in a direct plea to the hundreds of demonstrators who he said are threatening the livelihoods of others.

The protest started at the break of dawn at Golden Grove where residents were protesting the killing of 23-year-old Quindon Bacchus who was shot by a plainclothes policeman on June 10 at Haslington, ECD during an alleged undercover police operation.

Erupted after a facetious online outlet inaccurately reported that the cop, identified as Kristoff Denobrega, was released from police custody.

Dr. Ali, who returned to the country last night after being abroad for two international engagements, says people must allow the system to work with the Police Complaints Authority nearing completion of its investigation.

“The process has commenced and it has made tremendous progress. The Chairman, retired Justice Ramlall has assured me that very early in new week the police will present its findings to the DPP [Director of Public Prosecutions].

“I am urging residents on the road to stick to the facts and do not be misled by any social media posting or any information not verified.

“We must allow the system and institutions to work,” Dr. Ali said.

“There is no basis for action on road right now… no basis at this moment for the type of behaviour we are seeing on the road,” the President said.

“All of us want justice, all of us want fairness but we cannot base our actions on misleading information. Let us await the outcome of the system and not get emotional and act out of turn, based on reports not grounded in truth and facts,” he added.

It is very sad to see as the Country on the brink of moving forward for the first time in History. This is happening due to group of mislead people. If the people do not give the justice system a fair chance to work and prevail. Guyana Will forever be suppressed due to these atrocity in behavior . As a born Guyanese who return to Guyana seldom in hopes that our dear land will one day prevail. It is heartbroken to see in 2022 the lack of common sense and not facts.. Everyone has the right to protest and peacefully, is a god given human rights but what’s being display is more conspiracy and terror . How does this encourages overseas based Guyanese who has been longing to come back home; In addition, foreign investors to Guyana .
